“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32)
“Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?” (Gal. 4:16)
I believe that many people that we contend for the faith with cannot see the truths we offer them because they do not comprehend the language they speak, the words we offer do not have definitive meanings for them. They may be able to place words together to form a sentence, but the meanings of those words are either misinterpreted or used in a manner not conducive to the context.
And so, the truth that has set us free causes them to hate us, for it is not the truths they have believed, or been deceived into believing, or the words are misconstrued in a such a way to change their meaning in their ears.
As an example, today I contended for the truth of John 3:16 with a person.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
He was informing his listeners that the word “world” in the verse meant “elect,” and so was attempting to persuade the people that would listen to him that the Lord Jesus Christ only died for those who have been predestined by Him for salvation.
My friends, those who will reside in the Lake of Fire for all of eternity are there because of their own free will decision to deny the offering of the Lord’s shed blood for their sins, as much as we will live in the light of the love of God because we accepted the truths of the Scriptures.
“So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.” (Romans 14:12)
But the crux of my correcting this person, to which he offered no reply, what that in the Greek, which John 3:16 was written in, the word “world” means “earth,” or “Kosmos,” inferring in the latter tense the creation of the planets by the Almighty, not elect.
Not being proficient in what you are talking about to someone can be forgiven, if you will accept correction when it is offered, if you attempt to stand your ground on misinterpretations, not only will the truth not set you free, but you will remain in bondage to the deceptive lie that you have chosen to believe.
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” (Prov. 1:7)
If you do not pray for the Lord to reveal His truths to you, and that fervently and often, you will be deceived, and will lead others astray as well.
“Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.” (Matt. 15:14)
I could suggest to you dozens of books written by men of God who sought for diligently in prayer wisdom, Spiritual discernment and truth, and did so only for the glory of God, but if I could only suggest one, it would be a Strongs Concordance. Every single word of the Scriptures explained in detail, what they means in the language spoken in the day it was given to men by the Holy Spirit. It has no equal and is something that should be in the possession of every person who seeks truth.
Even if you only know one language, you should strive to know exactly what every word you speak means, a Thesaurus, online searches, a dictionary, these are all inexpensive resources but are invaluable to our search for the truth.
“But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.” (Matt. 5:37)
If you do not know the meaning of a word, in context, don’t use it until you do, if you are unclear of what a word or phrase or verse in the Scriptures means, then pray and study it, in context, until He reveals His truth to you.
No one can stand against the truth, even though the world is doing its best to do so today. You must be sure, in this you cannot be wrong, for it is God Himself you are speaking for, and He will accept no excuses in this matter.
