Thirst and Hunger

I hate evil with a passion, it is the antithesis of all that is holy and righteous, good and honorable, and the entire planet is filled with it.

Shall we speak of children who are abused in unspeakable ways, animals that are mistreated beyond human imagination, or shall we stick to the basics, the old familiars. “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” (1 John 2:16) It is everywhere, there is not one single spot on this planet that you will not find the effects of it, it encompasses every area of many people’s lives, and for the born-again believer, it is a constant companion, well hated, despised and loathed when it appears within us.

For me it started when the Lord showed me the truth of Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” To accomplish this, one must be acutely aware of evil, the inverse of righteousness, and one must also be aware that not all evil is from Satan and his demonic horde, man is quite capable on his own to perform every evil deed imaginable, this is quite easily seen.

The Lord will rule with a rod of righteousness during the Millennial Period, (Rev. 19:15) there will be no appeals courts, no excuses, justice and judgment will both be swift. Not so today, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.” (Prov. 29:2) And sometimes the wicked are in power, in authority, for very long periods of time.

Many Christians, if not most, can easily get off the path they are supposed to be on, and be diverted by a cause, there are literally tens of thousands of them that our adversary will place in front of them, and instead of continuing to carry the cross that our Lord has laid before them, they will, in a sense, either be completely diverted by this new deceit, or attempt to place themselves in many places at one time, thereby achieving nothing of eternal value. The diversions will of course seem honorable, but they will be nothing more than a diversion from what was first laid at their feet.

This is the evil that has attacked, and for the most part, conquered the church today, traditions taking the place of worship, entertainment where deep prayer and supplications should be, a fractured group with many different supposedly honorable tasks, but no unity of spirit. Evil is words with no action behind them, it is action for the sake of self instead of the glory of God, it is the emotion of faith, with no solid assurance behind it.

Persecutions, torture, maiming, killing, these are what most people, saved and lost, think of when the word evil is brought before them, brothers and sisters in Christ imprisoned for their faith, Satan and all of his works, this is the evil that they give pause to hate. The dog that was abandoned for whatever reason that later died on the street, the child who cannot go to school that day because the bruises are still visible, the man who says he loves his wife, but has volumes of pornography on his phone, those who show up to church each Sunday morning for no other reason than that is where they are supposed to be. Those who pay obeisance to the wealthy, well-off and popular, and step over the poor. Those who give, but never sacrificially, the list is virtually endless, and many there are that fit into it on a regular basis.

I do not believe that we can truly comprehend the word “righteous,” much less what it means in our own lives, so for me to say that I thirst and hunger for it may be a misrepresentation. Anymore I get upset when I see people speeding down the road, oblivious to the posted speed limits. Maybe it’s just old age creeping in, but I like to think that it is Christlike. “He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.” (Isaiah 53:3) If you want to know the fear of the Lord my friends, (Prov. 8:13) you cannot just hate evil, you must take a stand against it.
