If you have been saved by the grace of God through faith, then you are saved indeed, it is the only way to be saved, through Jesus Christ by the will of the Father who has called and chosen you. There is no other way, there is no work that you can perform that will assist in this, there is no work that will ensure your salvation will remain intact, it cannot be lost, stolen, returned, or removed, it is permanent, it is eternal.
The assurance of our salvation has nothing to do with how you feel from day to day, from moment to moment. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jer. 17:9) And it is this heart that is where our emotions are stored, we are to be in control of those emotions, not controlled by them. “But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.” (1 Cor. 9:27)
It is the same place where the old man, (Romans 6:6) the part of us that contains our sinful nature resides, and so pride, envy, lust, and all of the other attributes that are detrimental to us become emboldened by our emotions.
The assurance of our salvation is where our adversary, Satan attacks us most often, assurance is the basis of our acceptance that this grace was not of ourselves, and so along with this attack he attempts to persuade us that some form of works are necessary, not only to gain salvation, but to keep it. Every single religious organization on the planet is well aware of these deceits and uses all of them to ensure that some form of bondage is continued upon those who do not understand, again by the mercy and grace of the Lord, what has been written here.
Those who are indeed saved by grace will be changed by the Holy Spirit of God, the fruits of the Spirit, (Gal. 5:22-23) will be evident in their lives, not only to themselves, but to others, there will be no denying this. The majority of the works that they do will be for the benefit of others, and always, without exception, for the glory of God. “For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.” (Mark 9:41)
There will be some effort on our part, but that effort will always be driven by our desire to see God glorified, to show to the world around us the Lord Jesus Christ.
The steps of faith that we take are done by the Holy Spirit of God within us, we are to be spiritually mature enough to recognize this prompting, and to act upon them in faith. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Heb. 11:1) It is the submissive spirit within us that seeks only the glory of God, that will not only hear but act in such a manner, without regard to our own wellbeing, for He has promised to never leave us or forsake us, (Deut. 31:8) “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” (Jer. 29:11)
These actions of faith embolden us in the realization that the promises given to us are true, that He who has promised is faithful, and that “For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.” (2 Tim. 1:12) These works of faith for the glory of God only are the signs within us of the fruit of the Spirit, they are our assurance, not our emotions, not our obligations.
These are the commandments of Christ that we follow willingly, for one reason only, that God be glorified in us toward all who see and meet us. The faith that we have been blessed with has been given to us by God, no man in an unregenerate state would by his own free will and on his own accord choose to follow Christ, this was proven in the garden of Eden by Adam, yet this does not negate our free will, also shown by Adam in the garden.
We know and accept all of these truths by studying the Word of God, by praying that He would lead us into these truths from His Word, and by faith accepting that all He has written is indeed the truth. There is no other way.
