The Sorrow of Wisdom

If you pray for wisdom, you will receive wisdom, that’s the promise of God in James 1:5 “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” Wisdom is very important to the Lord, He wrote the entire Book of Proverbs so we could learn of this great gift, so we could seek it above all other things, it is more precious than gold, (Prov. 16:16) rubies, (Prov. 8:11) or silver, (Prov. 2:4) it is to be sought after above all things, for as the Psalms disclose the mind of God, the Proverbs describe wisdom, the knowledge of the Most High, as much as the finite mind of man can comprehend.

No one deserves this wisdom unless they desire above all else to glorify God, this is not the wisdom of the world, few are called to seek that path. (Prov. 18:5) There are warnings though, and that is the reason to study the Scriptures diligently, there is always a price to pay for serving Christ. Although no cost to ourselves should hinder our desire to serve, we should always use the intellect that He has blessed us with in all of our endeavors,  “For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,” (2 Tim. 3:6) and there are just as many willing to lead them.

The cost of wisdom was told to us by the wisest man ever to live, Solomon, and I do not believe it took him long to figure it out. “For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.” (Eccl. 1:18) This blessing at times, and I mean no offense when I say this, can seem like a curse, for sorrow and grief are most generally not two areas of our lives that we pursue with great intent, but they are part of the bargain, if you will, that comes with wisdom. You will begin to see the world as it truly is, and most people do not enjoy that, in fact they hide from this truth nearly constantly, it is very depressing at times, and is always beyond frustrating. To know that the Most High reigns, to know for a fact that Jesus Christ is risen, and then to watch almost the entire population of this planet continually reject Him is far beyond frustrating, it is the pinnacle of sorrow and grief, for we know their end. Place alongside of this religious organizations that proclaim to millions around the world that what He did on the cross was not enough, that we have to accomplish certain deeds, say prayers in a certain way, and you will bring upon yourself a level of sorrow you have never experienced before. They are going to hell, they are going to burn and suffer without pity forever, and they will not listen.

I am naïve in many ways, I know that, my mind still cannot wrap itself around the fact that there are prostitutes, murderers, thieves, and rapists that actually live in the land of Israel, I know it is ridiculous to have these notions, but it is incomprehensible that the city and land that God has chosen for Himself (2 Chronicles 6:6) would have such in it. “And there shall in no wise enter into it anything that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.” (Rev. 21:27) I know that is in the future, but it is just one more item that wisdom will bring into a man’s thoughts, the great blasphemies and sins that are committed every day and night by the people of this planet.

Pride follows closely behind wisdom, always lurking in the shadows, constantly whispering, “You are more blessed than them, you are better than them.” Many who have prayed for and received wisdom have fallen into the traps laid by the adversary, for he reserves his most subtle deceits for them, the items that are so close to the truths of Scripture that the man of God must be on guard constantly. Besides a heart filled with love and concern for all, wisdom is the principle thing, for if we do not have charity, love, we have nothing, but without wisdom and humility, the world will drag you away. Wisdom is what gives us the ability to understand the word Sovereign, and the only One it can ever be applied to, wisdom is the only way to be filled with the knowledge of God, (Col. 1:9) wisdom increases faith, it shows us the truth, it shows us the lies, it is the wisdom that only God can grant, and it is offered to all of His children.

But count the cost, for it takes the knowledge that comes with wisdom (Prov. 1:7) to be able to live in a life of sorrow and grief, it takes this wisdom and knowledge to know for a fact that the promises are true, and that He is faithful who has promised. The cost is high, you must be prepared to pay it.

2.    Your first responsibility is to the Lord; “Honor the LORD with thy substance, and with the first fruits of all thine increase”: (Prov. 3:9)

3.    You must consider your family after your first responsibility; “But if any provide not for his own, and especially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.” (1st Tim. 5:8)
