The Only Path

The path of the born-again believer is fraught with dangers that those who are still of the world cannot see, and with the Spiritual truths of the Word of God that they cannot imagine or understand.

We can see the fires of hell below, we can see the pitfalls on the path that have been placed there by our adversary, we can tell righteousness from unrighteousness only because the Lord God has blessed us with the ability to hear His truths and apply them. We have been blessed with spiritual discernment.

Some of these traps, these pitfalls and temptations we will fall into, but each time we are reminded of Proverbs 24:16, “For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.” It takes effort to climb around them, to move past them, to shield our hearts from those things that are displeasing to the Almighty.

We are willingly led, but we do not always follow very well.

There are many doors on our path, some more inviting than others, some more enticing to us than to others, each are there for a purpose, to draw us off the path, to promise us what cannot be given. Everything imaginable is there for our taking, and not one of them is profitable, they are all temporal, all fleeting, all a means of false relief from the path that we may at times find too strenuous, too difficult to tread.

This is the door of false religions, of places that say works of our own design will be pleasing to Him that placed us on the path. No need for unwavering faith, simply adhere to the traditions, repeat the phrases on command and at the proper time, recite repetitively the words that are meant to appease the Almighty, and all will be well. Faith is unnecessary here, grace is a foreign word, they promise that works will keep you from the fire below.

They lie.

Here the slope is slippery, yet manageable. On each side are the pleasures of the world, all for the asking, simply stray off the path a little and enjoy pleasures once never known to you. After a time, you will not even realize the downward pitch of the road, the slowly rising temperature, the flames that start to lick at your feet. Your salvation will not be lost, but your rewards may be, for you know full well that this is not the will of the Most High for your life.

It is much more difficult to climb back up that slope than it is to traverse down it, but others have done so before you, you are not the first to realize your error, repent, ask forgiveness and head back to where you belong, on the straight and narrow path.

Here the man of God can find some of the most dangerous pitfalls, here is where mankind attempts to lay accolades at your feet, to regale you with honors and earthly rewards, here is where pride attempts to draw you down to the fire below.

In the place of honor on the stage of life is not the place for the servant of the Most High. “Thank you, but no thank you. It is God who is to receive the glory.” That is to be our response to those well intentioned individuals.

My friends, this is not the path that most who profess Christ walk, there is little sunshine, there is little rest, there is much pain, suffering and sorrow, and the attacks rarely cease, but it is where you are called to walk. “A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.” (Psalm 91:7) You will pass by many doors that offer nothing of eternal value, many side paths that will entice you, draw you with worldly pleasures, many resting spots that will trap you behind bars of gold, in cages of self-assurance.

“Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.” (2 Tim. 3:12)

At the end there is no bright light, no well-lit tunnel, no rounds of applause, only a simple gate, and One waiting for you who has been beside you, watching over you the entire time. He never left you or forsaken you for one single moment.

Beyond that gate is the fulfillment of the promises of Psalms 16:11, the fullness of joy in the presence of the Almighty, pleasures forevermore at His right hand.

The Lord Jesus Christ is our greatest reward, the greatest prize that is waiting at that gate to welcome you home.

2.    Your first responsibility is to the Lord; “Honor the LORD with thy substance, and with the first fruits of all thine increase”: (Prov. 3:9)

3.    You must consider your family after your first responsibility; “But if any provide not for his own, and especially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.” (1st Tim. 5:8)
