The Only Desire

The Only Desire

What are the desires of your heart, are you waiting for them to be fulfilled, are they transitory and fleeting, only visible and felt for a short time, and then needing to be sought after again? Like a drunk in need of a drink, we seek after those things we long for only to find that they do not last, we thoroughly enjoy being in the midst of them, we do all that we can to remain in these states, but continuously we find ourselves only pursuing that which we once knew.

“There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.” (Prov. 11:24) Once we have found that which we call the desire of our heart, we will do all that is within our power to hold on to it, but as it is with all things in this life, it will pass away, nothing is permanent here. Family, love, acceptance, respect, we search out the temporary, we grasp the wind, we set our sights far too low, and most generally these sights are set upon ourselves, after all, is it not our heart we are speaking of, isn’t it our desires we are attempting to fulfill?

The mind is most easily swayed, the desires of the flesh are generally what come to mind when this topic is brought up, but the flesh is temporary, there is no good thing in it, (Rom. 7:18) the flesh serves self. We want to feel useful, we want to be loved, accepted, we do not desire to be a slave, and yet, that is what you are, saved or lost, all things serve the will of God, the problem is we do not like to think of ourselves in this way, for our desire is not Christ. The profitable servant is not just the one who does what he is told, can any servant do any less, would not that servant who will not serve be punished. Who were the five servants meant to represent in the parable our Lord spoke of in Matthew 25:1-12, were they not there at the gate also waiting, they may not have shown up with enough oil, they may have left, but only for the reason to get more oil so they could continue to wait for their Lord, and yet while they were gone he arrived, and they were locked out. He was just on the other side of the door when they came back, all He had to do was open it and let them in, after all, had they not also been waiting, had they not only left just to get more oil so they could continue to wait?

Those who are called to serve are always prepared to serve, they waste little time devoted to self-interest, they spend no time in that which is of no value to the Lord and the furtherance of His kingdom. The five were selfish, they gave no thought to the long view, only the temporary, they were not willing to run the entire race. Nothing is to be placed above Jesus Christ in our lives, no desire we have is to be compared to Him, any other preoccupation is to be seen as useless in our eyes.

The ideology of what a Christian is has changed dramatically over just the last few decades, many have become servants of their own desires, apathy is bred in the heart of the content individual, and not one Christian should ever feel content until he is standing beside his Master. The oil must never run out, the fire must never be quenched, every hint of evil is to be hated, the world and all it stands for is to be despised. Many have become lethargic, many who say they are believers are deceiving themselves, many may know His name, even some of His words from the Scriptures, but their heart is far from Him, He is not their one and only desire. We are so easily led astray, we are easily frightened and persuaded, we are in need of a shepherd, yet most will follow no other but their own heart, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jer. 17:9)

I know it is not easy, I carry crosses myself, my flesh is powerful and the old man inside of me is strong, refusing to quit the battle for even one moment, but it is not supposed to be easy, our Lord did not come to make life easy, He came to bring a sword, (Matt. 10:34) He came that our joy might be full, (John 16:24) not so that we would be happy and content. If you are content outside of the way that Paul explained it in Phil. 4:11 then your lamp may be running out of oil. Your heart will fool you every single time, it will search out constantly for the next pleasure, it will be content for mere moments in comparison to the length of your life, you will never find contentment outside of Jesus Christ, without Him your life will hold no meaning, you will continuously pursue only that which can never be held on to.

“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” (Luke 9:23)
