Opinions

I hate to break this to you, but your opinion does not matter. It may cause others to pause and think about what you have said, it may even have a modicum of truth to it, but in the end, it is no more than what you think about a particular subject.

“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” (John 17:17) There are, as far as I can recall, no opinions in the Word of God, there is documentation of God’s interaction with His creation, specifically mankind, but there are no opinions. There is much conjecture, again though only from those who could not see the truth, those that were either blinded by Satan, blinded by their own design, or even blinded by the Lord, but there are no opinions.

As far back as I can remember the newspapers have always had an opinion column, sometimes written by the general public, but many times by people who were paid to give their opinions, and by much of the populace those opinions were paid attention to. Every single social media site today revolves around one single hinge, if you will, people’s opinions. They are called comments, and there are hundreds of millions of them everyday on every possible topic imaginable, and here is where we find the crux of this short letter to you today, whether or not you, as a born-again believer are offering your opinions on those social media sites that you may visit and comment on, or the truths of the Word of God.

“And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.” (Rev. 20:12) Words are works, perhaps the most powerful form of works that we have, people read what we say, form an opinion on those words, and then reply to what we have written on those sites. I offer this truth to you, even if you just put a Scripture verse as a comment or reply on one of these sites, the wicked will find a way to make it seem as if it is your opinion, they will cast it back in your face, and then you have two options, and only two, you can continue the conversation with not only Scripture verses, but also your interpretation of them, in context to the subject matter, or you can simply stop typing.

“For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?” (Luke 14:28) If your life is focused on lifting up the name of Jesus, of glorifying God in all that you do, then that is the reason that you are on any of those sites, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, it should be your only reason for being there.

Now, there are of course exceptions to this, if you’re looking up a recipe, trying to find out how to fix your vacuum cleaner, but for any other site you have the same purpose in this life online as you do in person, to glorify God. You must think twice, pray and be sure that if you are going to reply to someone about a topic that you have more than just a rudimentary verse in mind, it must not only fit the subject matter, the topic of the video or conversation, but you must be prepared to continue on that thread if someone replies to you.

“Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.” (2 Peter 1:20) This means that if there is one verse on a particular topic, there will be at least another, and probably more. Here is why we apply 2 Timothy 2:15 in our lives, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” If someone replies to your comment, you cannot just leave them hanging, so to speak, not because that would be rude, but because you represent the Lord Jesus Christ here, and whether they are searching for the truth, or just have a desire to be contentious to the “Bible Thumper,” you have an obligation. In other words my friends, you must be prepared to speak before you speak.

But you also must be prepared to employ Matthew 7:6, “Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.” Some people just cannot be reached, if you meet that person and have sincerely tried to reach them for Christ, move on, they will find someone else to bother.

Consider the cost before you open your mouth or start typing, we are talking about the eternal soul of someone here. Your opinion does not matter, the truth of the Word of God is your strength and sword, use it wisely. The Holy Spirit will guide you in this, if you ask Him to.
