There is a hierarchy to this existence, there are levels of authority, for the born-again believers and for the lost, whether they decide to admit it or not in this life, it is God Almighty who reigns supreme, He alone is Sovereign. Three in one, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, nothing exists without Him, nothing is held together and continues without Him, He seeks approval from none for His actions.
Many people do not realize this, but angels and demons do not come next, as it were, on the list of authority, on the ladder of hierarchy, man does. “Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?” (1 Cor. 6:3) “Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?” (Heb. 1:14) It is man whom God had desired to be set just below Him in the order of authority, more than an incredible honor not deserved, but a very humbling thought, one that requires much humility. Our order in the place of God’s creation has nothing to do with our merits though, far from it, we were not placed in a position of dominion because of our great wisdom or compassion, we are in this authority only by the will of God, we earned nothing.
If there is one thing that man enjoys above most everything else though, it is power, it is a very small step indeed from there to sin, to forgetting that what we have received is from the Lord, (1 Cor. 4:7) and beginning to believe that we have this power because of a reason outside of the Lord’s will. That so small step led Satan to say, “I will,” it has bred countless ruthless despots, and it is the reason why this planet is heading into the days that we live in now. The taste of power without the knowledge of where the power comes from can be more than deceiving, it cannot only lead a man stray, it can cost the lives of many, for power desires to have no ruler over it. “For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.” (Exo. 34:14)
And so, since we are made in the image of God, yet corrupted by sin, when we either receive or attempt to take power for ourselves, we guard it jealously. It is the entire point of John 13:1-17 when our Lord washed the disciple’s feet, it is the reason that He said in Luke 10:20 “Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.” It takes very little to step over the line of service to the One who grants all power, and beginning to believe that we have supreme power in ourselves.
Without exception, every single person who lived one hundred years ago today has absolutely no power whatsoever over the human race, death is the conqueror of all assumed power. This is one of the things that keeps men humble, the knowledge that all they are now is not going to last, “For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever; seeing that which now is in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the wise man? as the fool.” (Eccl. 2:16) It is God that guides the steps of man, (Prov. 16:9) whether they will admit this truth to themselves or not is immaterial, He alone is Sovereign, He alone is the Creator and Sustainer of life, free will my friends only extends so far.
The majority has rarely, if ever, ruled on this planet, there is and always has been one man somewhere that formulates in his mind a plan for power, begins to act upon that plan, and then becomes Nebuchadnezzar, Napoleon, Hitler, Alexander the Great, and then, as it will, to those who are once again today attempting the conquest of the entire human race, they will fade into history, and Almighty God will be right where He always has been, on the throne, Sovereign.
If you are having difficulties with these evil days that we are living in, turn to the back of the Book, there you will find the end, how things, all things, are going to work out quite well indeed for all who claim and serve Jesus Christ as Lord, you will see the King on the throne, where He always has been, you will read of joyful, content servants, forever more in a place of perfect peace and security. What is coming is inevitable, both here and in the eternal, but know this, the King still reigns, always has, always will.
