It depends on the amount of pressure, you are not going to flood the valley with a garden hose, but if the dam is destroyed, so will all be in the valley.
“Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!” (James 3:5)
Our adversary nearly always chooses the garden hose, he is in no hurry, and subtle deception can be much more profitable than the full-frontal attack, and those attacks generally arrive after we have become either accustomed to or comfortable with a portion of our lives.
Adultery does not enter into the mind of the newlywed, a better this or that does not come into the thoughts of one who just received a new this or that.
Contentment my friends does not breed wants.
“But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” (Heb. 5:14)
When faith is tested, it does not separate the wheat from the chaff, the chaff has no abiding eternal faith, but it does reveal those whose wants are righteous, those who, no matter the circumstances or the possible consequences to themselves, will never be satisfied, will never be content in this life, for they know the truth of Psalm 34:8 and they cannot imagine not wanting more.
“O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.”
Growing in the grace and knowledge of the Lord, wanting, even pleading daily for more of Him, following into the fire with no hesitancy, with no thoughts of the still waters. Obeying in love, for the promises are true. And to those who seek Him in this life, He will increase the pressure, but mercifully slowly, for He remembers that we are only dust.
“I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.” (Prov. 8:17)
Through pain, suffering, sorrow and great frustrations, with only moments, and fleeting at that, of contentment, for there is more, there is and always will be more of the Almighty to know.
Growing in the knowledge of the Living God has no end, not in this life, nor in the eternal life to come for those who have been saved by grace through faith, it is an endless pursuit that will never reach an end, we will always be pursuing the Most High.
“For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.” (1st Cor. 2:11)
Just in His creation alone there is more than any man will ever know. I saw an image the other day showing millions of lights sixty-three million light years away, and each of those lights were not stars, but entire galaxies. In a single drop of water, I have seen the movements of something alive.
“O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!” (Romans 11:33)
Are you diligently seeking Him every moment of every day, are your thoughts consumed by Him, does nearly every action, deed or word by you in some way reveal the sincerity of your heart to know more of Him? How can one contemplate eternity if one is not diligently seeking Him today?
The contentment the Scriptures speak of is the current circumstances we find ourselves in today, but the one who will not stop seeking understands Philippians 3:12.
“Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.”
And in a fashion some of you may not understand my friends, some of us will never know full contentment, and we rejoice beyond comprehension of this truth. With each revealed truth the Almighty gives us, hundreds more are just over the horizon, and by His infinite mercies He will never open the floodgate.
We are never going to fully know God, and I cannot with words express my anticipation of an eternity of seeking His face.
In this regard, I pray you are never content, I pray you never find a place on the path that makes you feel comfortable, I pray you will today and for all eternity diligently seek His face.
