What we see as obvious, the lost see as foolishness, the same as we used to.
The truth that is Jesus Christ is guarded by Jesus Christ, when we first come to the knowledge of the cross, even before our salvation, we are shown as much as we need to know, the entire expanse, the knowledge of God, (Prov. 2:5) the mind of Christ is not revealed to us yet. For a man to even come to this point is a miracle itself, for the truth defies all logic, it goes against everything that most have been taught, it is the very first step of the soul outside of the world, the known, and into the unknown, the Spiritual.
The truth shows us that everything that we thought was truth was actually a lie, that all superstitions are irrelevant, and the tools of a weak, unfaithful mind, that there is no such thing as luck, chance, or coincidence. “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28) The truth that is Jesus Christ proves to us there is no such things as ghosts, but there are angels and demons, that we are not nearly as important as we once thought we were, the truth removes pride and offers humility.
But at the cross, before that decision is made, none, or very little of this knowledge is offered, what is shown to that person standing there, deciding if they should fall to their knees in eternal submission to the One who hung on that cross is love, an enduring, all-encompassing love, love that does not judge past actions, one that completely understands that you are in rebellion to it, and still offers that love to you, and you need bring nothing with you but faith.
Truth is hidden from most people in this life, it is not unsearchable, “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20) But it is not something that most people are searching for, most generally because of pride, the pride that demands love, or its conception of it, based on its own ideas and wants. Satan wants to be God, Adam wanted more only after he found out there was more, the lost want what they want, but only on their terms. That is not hidden at the cross, humility in the light of a Sovereign God is shown to us there, the truth that we are not the center of the universe, that we are not as important as we like to think we are, that we have absolutely nothing to offer to God, but faith. “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” (Heb. 11:6)
I believe it is why the Lord calls so many who are at the very bottom, who have expended their last drop of energy on their attempts to run their lives, and have come up wanting, there is nowhere left to go. One must consider this thought then, how many of us would be in the service of the Lord, if He would have left us in that place continuously, how many still base their concepts of the Lord on the things of this world as proof of His love, of a healthy life, a productive life, one filled with happiness and very little turmoil.
Here is where Satan steps in after our salvation, in the thoughts of the “necessary works” that we must complete or continue in, in basing our lives on the emotional inputs that come from the world or even ourselves, from feelings of power and authority because we are saved, to feelings of rejection and uselessness, because we are saved. All that is within his power to keep us unprofitable he will do, so that he may accuse us. (Rev. 12:10) “An unjust man is an abomination to the just: and he that is upright in the way is abomination to the wicked.” (Prov. 29:27)
The lost cannot comprehend what we take for granted, what we know as truth, that they can be loved with a love unfathomable, with a love that will never end, that they can be accepted just as they are. That is what we are to tell them, it is what they want to hear, it is in their heart all they have ever wanted to hear, they just will not admit it to themselves. At the cross, love is what is offered, all else past that is icing on the cake.
