I don’t think that anyone in hell has ever said, “It could be worse,” but I’m going to guess that at least once everyone who is there has said, “I wish I would have.”
It never ceases to amaze me when I contemplate the Lord in this area, in His omniscience, He knows everything, everything that has happened, is happening and will ever happen, God is not bound by His creation of time, and yet He allows things to happen that are incomprehensible in the eyes of man. What is worse, the torture and killing of those in the womb, or those who are very young, cheating on your spouse, or kicking a dog? No book has ever been made that could hold all the words necessary to describe the sins and atrocities of mankind, yet He knows them all, and where He is, that book exists. “Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.” (Heb. 4:13)
Why the Lord allows this is for His glory, we don’t need to understand that statement, in fact, we probably never will, we are consoled only in the fact that where we are going none of those things will ever occur, not one sin will ever happen in our eternal home. The old nature (Eph. 4:22) in us will be removed, that part of us that in one way or another adds words to that book of sins, we will know the entirety of the truth, (John 8:32) and that truth will set us free.
It is not only inconceivable, but impossible for us to comprehend the punishment that was laid upon our Savior on that cross, every single sin of every man ever born was laid upon Him, the Tribulation period in comparison is a walk in the park on a sunny day, the flood of Noah’s time just a few sprinkles. Pain, suffering, anguish, the total meaning of each of these words and every single other one that you can think of was laid upon Him, there has never been and never will be a more expansive expression of the wrath of God upon sin than at that moment in time.
All for us, and all fore known by the Lord.
This is the price of free will, this was the cost of creating living souls that will never die, given the ability to choose their own path, to make their own decisions as to the place of their final destination, and not one of them that disregards this price paid will have an excuse. “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20) Not one of them will be able to say that they did not know the consequences of their rebellious nature.
In terms of humanity, no one can love anyone else without this gift of free will, the two cannot exist without each other, love cannot be forced upon anyone, it can be offered and received, or it can be denied.
I don’t know how God thinks, no one does. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.” (Isaiah 55:8) I don’t know how long He contemplated what He was preparing to do when He created man, with the full knowledge that His Son would need to pay the highest possible price for those He did not need in the first place, for not only those that would reside with Him forever in unspeakable joy and love, but for those who would be punished for all eternity for rejecting that same love. No one in hell has ever said, “It could be worse,” everyone in heaven is going to say, “It’s only going to get better.”
