What we want is for things to go right, no problems, no accidents or incidents, no unforeseen events that might corrupt or alter the plans we have made. What we who are hid in Christ want is the fulfillment of Matthew 5:6.
“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.”
It takes a very small amount of the Spiritual blessing of discernment from the Almighty to understand that the ways of this world are not just misplaced, not just askew, but evil, completely and totally against the Word of God. I cannot say against His will in the overall scheme, if you will, of things, for He has never and will never lose control of His path for this world.
“A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.” (Prov. 16:9)
But in the path of the will of mankind, specifically of the wicked, is God’s will being done?
Matthew 6:10 is a statement that men of God have contemplated since it was first spoken by our Savior.
“Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”
The will of the Most High is being done in heaven, this verse leaves no doubt to that question, the question is, is His will being done on earth? The steps that He guides, are those the steps of the wicked towards His end? If we consider Pharoah and Nebuchadnezzar, perhaps even Pontious Pilate, the answer would be a resounding yes.
I think in inverses, in a sense in reverse engineering, and so that statement, that request that the Almighty’s will would be done on earth, leaves room to question whether or not His will is actually being done or not. There are instances where we can easily see that it is not, those who abuse women or children, the cruelty of some towards the living creatures of His creation, violence, pride, lust, selfishness and a thousand other actions, thoughts, words and deeds that came upon mankind when Adam harkened to the voice of His wife.
But even in all that, we must remember the omniscience of the Most High, He knew all this was going to happen before he even created the angels, before He created anything. And so, is it really a question that His will is being done or not?
“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” (Rev. 4:11)
Sometimes my friends, I wonder if perhaps there are questions I should not ask, much less place in these letters for you to contemplate.
If anything is ever done that is not in the will of the Lord on this earth, then in some manner which we cannot fully comprehend, it is because He has given all mankind free will, and He is allowing free will to usurp, to override, His will.
I mean this in no offensive way, but I can think of no greater expression of free will than for that which is created to go against the will of Him who created them.
What is not God’s will being done on earth can only be attributed to the free will of man, and because He allows us to express our free will, this verse stands as truth.
“There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.” (Romans 3:11)
He seeks us, He calls us, and some of us are chosen. We then modify our will to be aligned with His. And when this happens my friends, we begin to see this world as it truly is. We begin to thirst and hunger for righteousness, we begin to pray, and that earnestly, that His will would be done on earth as it is in heaven.
But above all that, we begin to understand why we pray and say, “Thy will be done.”
