Hunger and Thirst

Hunger and Thirst

A small dead kitten on the side of the road; a dog, limping badly, ribs showing, slinking down an alley hoping no one sees him, because they will beat him, again. A horse, laying on its side, too weak to get up from lack of food, while the green field on the other side of the fence glistens with the dew of the morning.

“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.”  (Matt. 5:6)

A child, screaming in its crib, as it does so many nights, while the one who calls itself the child’s mother searches the streets for the potion that calls to her each day, each hour, each moment; The young man, whose parents name is ‘The Street’, searching for someone to tell him he has value, he has worth, and if he does not find it, he will prove that this respect is due him when he inflicts the pain that he feels inside of him on them.

“For He satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry soul with goodness.”  (Psalm 107:9)

She lays on the kitchen floor, again, sobbing knowing full well the bruises will fade long before she tries to cover them, she has given up trying to hide them, they come so often, his love for her left a long time ago, he stays only because his ‘stuff’ is here; He puts the candy bar in his pocket, no one sees him, it gets easier each time, soon he will steal greater prizes, they will never catch him, his parents don’t care about him anyway, they don’t even know he exists, their own lives their only priority.

“Blessed are ye that weep now, for ye shall laugh”. (Luke 6:21)

She’s kind of pretty, and what the heck, his wife hasn’t given him a second look in two weeks, and, she’ll never find out anyway, the ring slips off his finger easier than it ever has, he barely even notices that he does it; Nobody’s ever going to find out, the teachers only here for the money, besides, everybody cheats on the exams, lie, cheat, steal, that’s the code of today, right, how else are you supposed to get ahead in this life.

“As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness”. (Psalm 17:15)

What they don’t know won’t hurt them, right, besides, they’re not home and I’ve been wanting that thing for a long time, and, hey, they’ve got plenty of money, they should have put in a better security system if they wanted to keep their stuff; Awe, the kids going to hear that kind of language someday anyway, might as well get used to it now, a man’s got to know how to get his message across, what do you think this world is, some kind of lollipop land; How many times have I told you, no, I’m not going to church with you, everybody there is a hypocrite anyway, you should hear how some of those people talk during the week, I can meet God just as well in the woods, why do you think they call it God’s country.

“Blessed is the man that thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple”. (Psalm 65:4)

What do you mean I’ve had enough, I’ll drink all I want and there’s nobody going to tell me when to stop, and if you try to take those keys from me again, you’ll learn who’s in charge; Of course I’m not going to have this kid, my career’s just getting started and I don’t have time for a kid right now, besides, they told me it’s just a blob of tissue at this stage, it’s not even considered a human being; You bet I beat the little brat, he knocked all my stuff onto the floor, I don’t care if he’s only four years old, I could tell he did it on purpose, besides, it’ll teach him a lesson he won’t forget.

“He will fulfill the desire of them that fear Him: but all the wicked will He destroy”. (Psalm 145:19)

So what if we’re both girls, we love each other and nobody can change that, it’s not like it’s a sin thing, besides, God is love, right; The next time he comes around here, I’m going to punch him right in the nose, nobody talks to me like that, I’ll show him who’s in charge; Come on, we really like each other, don’t we, everybody does it, and you know I love you, besides, you won’t get pregnant.

“When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Isreal will not forsake them”. (Isa. 41:17)

So what if your mom and dad said you can’t, what are you their slave, come on, what are they going to do, kick you out, what are you, some kind of coward; Yea, yea, she keeps telling me “Jesus is His name, not a curse word”, what does she know, if he was here I’d say the same thing to him, he’s just some invisible sky daddy, he ain’t real, those people just need a crutch to get through life; Man, that was the dirtiest joke I’ve ever heard, nobody tells them like you, where do you get all those ideas from, all the porno mags you’ve got laying around, I bet; Hey, come over here, have I got the latest gossip, let me tell you what I heard about her, you won’t believe it, make sure to pass it around, but don’t let her know where you heard it.

“If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink”. (John 7:37)

My friends, sin is all around us, and while we are in this world, we cannot escape its presence, but, we do not have to show partiality toward it. Use the analogy of the garden of Eden, Adam and Eve knew the fruit was hanging from that tree, it was always present, God did not put it there as a temptation, (James 1:13) but the ability to sin is always present, it is our choices, our free will that can be our downfall. Sin in our lives grieves the Holy Spirit and can lead to a disruption of our fellowship with Him. Remember 1st John 1:9, seek his face when even the most minor sin enters into your life or your thoughts. As for the world around us, we can and should pray without ceasing, and fear the Lord. The fear of the Lord is reverential trust and a hatred of sin. Hate it in yourself, hate it in the world, flee from it, fight it in the power of the Holy Spirit with the sword of the Spirit, put on the whole armor of God. (Eph. 6:11) Do not despair, have hope, for He is faithful who has promised. Pray for and reach all those you can for His Glory, do not be weary in well doing, (Gal. 6:9)  Re-read the underlined Scripture verses, take hope in them, our Lord will guide you if you seek His face continually.

“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled”.
