Why is it that most of the questions the heathen ask are based around the temporary, the trivial, items and pursuits of the world around them, why do they shy away so frequently from the knowledge of the eternal.
To the majority of the people on this planet death is the enemy, no greater foe exists to them, and inside each of them, in all of us for that matter, they know that a day is coming that will be their last. It is easier to occupy one’s mind on the known than the unknown, the latter brings with it hesitation of what is considered reality, and so the matter of death becomes either nothing more than a passing curiosity, a great fear, or can actually become passed over in their thoughts, believing that it will not occur to them. “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” (Heb. 9:27)
The first part of this verse is accepted by the wicked of this planet, whether they will openly admit it or not, they all know for a fact that one day they will die, the second part, not so much, for it infers a being greater than themselves who is in charge of what will happen to them next. This is one of the main reasons that Satan said, “I will,” he would not accept the Sovereignty of his Creator, and personally I believe that once he found out that the Almighty was not going to end his existence, that he indeed would continue to be, he “let loose,” if you please, and decided to do as much damage as he possibly could. How much of God’s plan for His creation Satan knew before both the Old and New Testaments were created, I do not know, but nevertheless there is one item that he knew for sure, he was never going to die, to be completely obliterated.
Here is where the lost falter, God has placed eternity into their hearts, (Eccl. 3:11) they know for a fact there is more to come, so their refusal of the Most High is an accountable choice that they alone must face. I have often wondered how long it took before man decided there was another god, another powerful being that should be worshipped for their own personal advancement, protection, growth in power, or for whatever gain they thought it necessary to do so. Cain did not seem overly surprised when God showed up and punished him for not only his offering, but for the murder of his brother, (Gen. 4:11) yet even many, many years later when in the wilderness, after seeing all the wonderous works upon the house of bondage in Egypt, the people still made a golden calf. (Exo. 32:1-4)
It takes but a small amount of conversation with a person to find out what God they serve, which will tie directly to the items they will deem necessary to obtain favor from that god in relation to the life after this one. There is no such thing as a true atheist, they do not exist, they may be very well versed in expounding upon the reason for their unbelief, but in the furthest recesses of themselves they know they are lying to themself.
Satan’s first words that we are told of to man were ones meant to instill doubt, the purpose behind them have been discussed since that moment, but the greater question would be why God would allow this to happen, why give the one who was once the covering cherubim (Eze. 28:14) the ability, the opportunity to destroy all that God had said was very good. (Gen. 1:31) Love. Because if love is given freely it cannot be measured, it has no equal, it is the highest, most precious gift that anyone can offer.
It is my personal belief that at this point in my walk with Christ that the enabling of free will is one of the most precious and terrible gifts that the Almighty has ever given to men, for He knew full well that it would require the sacrifice of the ultimate gift, His own Son. By allowing us to choose, He removed from Himself the right, not the power, but the right to forcibly exert His Sovereignship over the direction of not only our lives here, but in the one to come, and it has cost Him more sorrow than we will ever be able to comprehend. “Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.” (Matt. 25:41)
This is not always going to be spoken in hateful wrath, but with much grief, yet by giving every human soul that was born, souls that are rightly His (Eze. 18:4) free will, He has given every person a choice as to whom they will serve.
It is not so much a fear of death that drives the lost away from the conversation of where they will spend eternity, it is the rebellion in them against the Most High, they refuse to serve Him, and instead devise a god that will enable them to believe themselves to be the master and director of their fate once they depart this earthly realm. Every so-called church that does not confess that Jesus Christ is the only way to the Father is a cult, I politely refer to them as religious organizations, every cult that says that there is any work that we must perform along with what our Savior did on the cross is evil and lying, and should rightly fear death, for it will be the first step to the second death that awaits them. The heathen, the wicked, the lost, whatever terminology you have decided to give to those who will not accept Jesus Christ as Lord have every right not to discuss their final day, but not for the reasons, or excuses, that they give.
The only alternative to open rebellion is submission, and pride will fight that alternative until the very day of their death, then it will be too late.
