“He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.” (Isaiah 53:3)
Why? Surely not because of the cross, it pleased the Father to bruise Him, and it pleased the Son to always do the will of the Father. If this sorrow and grief that our Lord knew was because of the cross only, that which had been set before the foundation of the world to happen, then from eternity past with the knowledge of what was approaching He would have continuously been filled with sorrow and grief, nothing but the anticipation of that moment would have filled His thoughts, and only when it was completed would those feelings be swayed.
“And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.” (Matt. 26:39)
No, I do not believe that the Lord Jesus Christ was filled with dread, with sorrow and grief because He was going to accomplish the will of the Father, it is His will that has been His joy, pleasure and only desire to fulfill since eternity past and will be so throughout all eternity.
I think we are the reason.
“Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.” (Eze. 28:15) One must consider this along with the subject matter of this poorly written letter, was there great anger in the Almighty when Satan rebelled, can He who sits on the throne of eternity express anger at what He already has known will occur from eternity past?
Before He created Lucifer, He knew what he would do, before you were born, He knew your end. “Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.” (Heb. 4:13)
Our finite minds cannot comprehend the infinite, the Almighty resides in an ever present “now,” there is no past, present or future for Him, He is everywhere and in every time at all times. Why create that which will rebel against you, why create that which will cause you great sorrow, which will bring grief to your Son which you love above all else. Why place yourself in a position by your own free will which will cause you to pour your wrath upon the Son who desires nothing more than to see you glorified?
The grief and sorrow had nothing to do with our Savior obeying the will of the Father, it is and always has been His joy to do so, it is, in my humble opinion, because of us.
Made in the image of the Living God, created as eternal souls, with the ability to freely chose the path of our lives, and then rebelling against Him who in great love gave us life. To walk amongst those living souls you have created and to look into the faces of them that you know without a shadow of a doubt will spend eternity in the Lake of Fire in pain, suffering and complete and total hopelessness because they will not accept the incredible love offered to them.
To look in those faces and plead with them as they reject you.
Sorrow and grief beyond anything imaginable to us.
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6) The way rejected, the truth not believed, life carelessly and with malicious intent cast aside for vainglory and pride.
Love despised caused that grief, love denied caused that sorrow.
Wrath will be replaced instead of love for despising His Son, eternal torment will be placed upon those who denied His offering of eternal love. Those who reject the Lord Jesus Christ will know no love for all eternity, those who have been crucified with Him will know no end to that love.
Live your life for His glory, love in a way that never allows one moment of grief or sorrow to come upon Him because of you.
