Glorify Him

Glorify Him

There are many reasons why these letters are written each day to you, but there is always and only one purpose that stands alone for their existence, to glorify God, no higher calling is set before the children of the Most High than this. Recall the great commandment of our Lord in Matt. 22 when speaking to the man who placed the question of purpose, the reason for the existence of man, “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.” (Matt. 22:37) That is the reason that we are alive, so that we might glorify God in the highest, so that His name will be exalted above the heavens (Psalm 148:13) in everything that we do.

The fiber of our entire purpose for living should contain no other aspect than this, is what I am doing, thinking, reading, seeing, hearing, are my actions and deeds not just pleasing to the Lord, but are they glorifying His Holy name. It is beyond comprehension for me anymore to know that there are individuals in this world who profess Christ as Lord but make the cares and concerns of this world their first priority, that there are those who are embarrassed to speak of Him when in the presence of others, that have still placed self above Jesus. How many individuals do you know that every time you meet them, without fail, a scripture verse passes their lips, who in their everyday, normal conversation have some form of praise for the Almighty. It matters not where the conversation begins, by the end of it they will have found some way to bring up the name of Jesus, to give glory to God in some manner, and it will come from them as natural, as the air they breathe.

I am afraid that these individuals are few and far apart today, many of those who profess Christ as Lord have decided not to share Him with others for a variety of reasons, shame, fear, embarrassment, they have little desire to go apart from the crowd and follow the path of servitude. “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” (Heb. 11:6) My friends, once you have found Him, you have found your heart’s desire, there is nothing left to seek for, everything that you have ever wanted or needed is found in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ, to know Him is to know the fulfillment of life. I am not speaking of witnessing to the lost here, I am not addressing the edifying of our brothers and sisters in Christ, it is simply one of the normal attributes of a born-again believer to glorify His Holy name, it is part of our nature. It is perhaps one of the reasons that so often the “church Christian” is brought up in these letters to you, they are adept at sitting in the pews, but lack dramatically the desire to take these same actions and attitudes outside of the doors of the assembly, it is very rarely a place they glorify God, that place we call the world.

I believe that it is the heartfelt desire of every follower of Christ to be in such a lifestyle, one completely devoid of self-interest, of shame and fear, to be filled to overflowing with the knowledge that they serve a Risen Savior, and to have that love within them at all times. Here is a truth, a simple fact, if we did not care what others thought about us, if our main focus was continually on Christ, we would know no embarrassment, we would feel no trepidations when it came to our speech, our vocabulary would continuously revolve around the name of Jesus. Here then is a question for you, are you a Christian in word and deed, or only in thought, are you a follower of Christ only on Sunday morning, or throughout the week, and I would ask you not to answer according to your own perspective, but in the eyes of those who know you, in the eyes of God. “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” (Prov. 14:12)

You know the truth about yourself, don’t you, you know whether or not you speak openly and honestly to all you meet about our Lord, or if you don’t, you know the reasoning, the rationalizations behind that also, you cannot hide from yourself, and you most definitely cannot hide from God. “If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.” (Psalm 139:8) We have one job, one responsibility, one main directive, glorify God, that’s it, everything else is secondary, all else comes after this one mandate, we are to lift up the name of Jesus. Until this main precept has begun in the life of the born-again believer, no other task will be set before them, no other reason for our existence can be found. No man can say he loves Christ who will not speak of Him, no man can say he is a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ who will not lift His name up to others, this man is deceiving himself, and his faith is not real.

We have been given a candle, it is to be shown to others, to help them to find the way, to edify them, to rebuke and reprove them, to show them they are loved. There is no prepared speech that can do that, there are no words that we possess that can bring a man to repentance, to bring the wayward son home, only the words of God can do that, and only those who have purposed in their hearts to glorify God in every aspect of their lives will be used by Christ for this purpose. The question remains then, what is your purpose in life, the answer is clear, to glorify God, to lift up the name of Jesus, there are no alternatives for the believer. Now you must ask yourself, “am I doing this.” The only one that needs to know the answer is you, Christ already knows, only you know if you are deceiving yourself. There is no rest, peace, or security outside of Christ, there are no rewards in heaven for good intentions, a heart that feels saved, but can show no works of the Spirit of God is not saved, pure and simple. “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” (Matt. 7:20)

All of our fruits for our Lord flow from the grace and mercies of God, the desire to do a thing is not the same as doing it. The end of your life is coming soon, whether it be today or many years from now, it is approaching, you need to be absolutely sure of this my friends, this one statement, this one question must always be in your mind, and shown by your words and actions, am I glorifying God. Eternity hangs in the balance.

2.    Your first responsibility is to the Lord; “Honor the LORD with thy substance, and with the first fruits of all thine increase”: (Prov. 3:9)

3.    You must consider your family after your first responsibility; “But if any provide not for his own, and especially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.” (1st Tim. 5:8)
