I asked my lovely wife tonight what she thought might happen if I accidentally spilled a glass of milk in heaven, she jokingly said that there would be serious repercussions! I’m not so sure though.
I don’t think enough Christians spend any serious amount of time thinking about our eternal home, I think that maybe at best it’s just an occasional passing thought, which is a shame, because it is after all where we are going to be, or at least call home, for all of eternity, specifically in New Jerusalem, a city that by far dwarfs anything ever conceived by man. I like to think that there are restaurants there, because I know that some people, not all saved brothers and sisters in Christ of course, really enjoy cooking and baking, they love to see the faces of those they have prepared meals for as they enjoy every bite. And I know that there are individuals such as my wife and I who enjoy going out to eat, or at least used to before all this ridiculous “pandemic” affair started.
There are people who enjoy making clothes, craft and artistic items, chocolates and candies, yes, I believe in our forever home there will be ample opportunity not only to produce wares, but to obtain them as well. I know that there are many people who enjoy sports of all kinds, those that have been blessed with the physical abilities in this life to do so now, and those who wish they could, and so one of the “Pleasures forever more” (Psalm 16:11) I believe will include those opportunities. What kinds of games and sporting events? How big is your imagination?
No one alive can comprehend how many galaxies and planets there are, but how long do you suppose it would take to explore all of them in say just one small galaxy? My wife and I intend to find out, but if I know her well enough, it will be the ones with the best beaches first. How about individuals whose one joy is to spend time with people, to just sit and relax or take a nice, casual stroll and converse about whatever comes to mind, those people will be more than happy, they will be ecstatic.
My friends, “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” (1 Cor. 2:9) Whatever you can imagine about heaven does not even come close to what awaits us, you and I have never seen or witnessed anything even close to what He has in store for those that love Him. It is why I have contemplated at times the words in Matthew 16:23, “For thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.” What possibly could entice the most powerful being ever created to give up not only all he already knew about, but an eternity of bliss is beyond me.
I think that it is very important to give serious thought to heaven occasionally, and not just the joy of being in the presence of the Most High, which is the pinnacle of every believers hopes, but to think of the enjoyment that awaits us, the pleasures, the experiences, the fun, and knowing that not one of them will grow wearisome, that every one of them will be available to us at all times. I believe that our rewards are connected to these opportunities in some way, but I dare not say how, I think that those who have submitted willingly to the Holy Spirit will in some way be rewarded above those who have not, but I will not expound on those thoughts.
Instead, I like to think of the unending time I will get to spend enjoying the pleasures forever more with my beautiful wife, with the opportunities to play with my long gone four-legged friends, to sit at the feet of my Savior and listen to Him speak. And the best part? I can’t even begin to imagine the first day of eternity. It is going to be awesome, and it is never going to end.
