“All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” (John 1:3)
“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” (Rev. 4:11)
You, me, the mountains and the sea, the angels, the principalities and powers, even those who were cast out of heaven. Everything that is was created by the Almighty for His pleasure.
Please, mark well that word “pleasure,” it does not mean for His amusement or even enjoyment, the pleasure of the Almighty rests within Himself, no eternal force or item is necessary for the Lord to know pleasure.
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” (Gen. 1:1) In all truth, Genesis 1:1 could read, “In the beginning God created all known reality.” Before the heavens and the earth, before the universe, the angelic host, before anything was, God was and always has been, He decided one day, as best as the human mind can comprehend it, to make known reality because it was His pleasure to do so. The best possible way that it can probably be expressed is because He wanted to.
“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” (Gen. 2:7)
Again, I will not profess to know the mind of God, but I would contemplate that this was perhaps something that He may have pondered over.
Sometimes my friends, these thoughts are quite difficult to express.
There was, as far as we are told, nothing but God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. To bring into existence living souls that would be forever means, in the loosest sense, that from now on throughout all of eternity there will be more than just the Holy Trinity, no soul ever created by the Almighty will cease to exist. A monumental occasion if you really stop to consider it. Heaven will never be empty, we who will reside there will always be.
If the Almighty had not created man with a living soul, if He had not given him free will, there would have been no such place as the Lake of Fire, where souls, created to exist longer than anyone of us can ever understand, will suffer without hope. The best way I know how to phrase it is that when the thought of creating people with souls, and angels with choices, the Lord may have pondered for just a moment what He was about to do.
“Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.” (Heb. 10:38) If all things were created for His pleasure, how are we to interpret this verse. Here my pen will remain silent.
If you have been saved by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, your pleasure should be in serving Him who made all reality, Him who does not need you to serve Him, to praise His Holy name, who needs absolutely nothing from you, or me, or anything in His creation. “Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” (Luke 12:32)
Perhaps this analogy will help you, as poor as it is. Think here on the person in your life that you love the most, that is the closest to your heart. Now think if that person was no more. “I would die,” you might say. Although people have died of a broken heart, it is rare, you would not die, that person, your love for that person is not what enables you to live.
“Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.” (Isaiah 53:10)
Forever and without end, that is how long you are going to exist, you will never cease to exist, you always will be.
In my mind it had to have caused the Most High at least a moment of contemplation, from only three, the Father, the Son, and he Holy Spirit, to billions of living souls. Forever.
Give Him thanks for what He has done, find your pleasure in Him.
