“The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.” (Psalm 110:1) Not “our” enemies, although the inference could, and possibly should be applied, for Jesus Christ is God, the second, as we can best describe it in our finite minds, person of the Trinity.
It is that word footstool, meaning “subdued” that I would ask you to contemplate today, and how it relates to the Sovereign Lord of all creation, the Director of men’s steps, the One to which all are accountable.
We who are basically stuck in a portion of the timeline of this planet cannot comprehend He who created time, He to whom time has no real meaning.
“But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” (2nd Peter 3:8)
This verse has no relationship to the passing of time as we understand it for the Almighty, He is everywhere in all times, and so the opening verse must be viewed in that context.
The Most High is always subduing His enemies, no matter how evil, vile and despicable their actions are, He is allowing them to perform them. Do not be misled here, He is not directing them to perform those sinful acts, but He is allowing it.
How much more subdued can one be than to be cast into hell?
“For the grave cannot praise thee, death can not celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth.” (Isaiah 38:18)
I have no Scriptural proof of this that comes to mind at the moment, I recall that death and hell will be cast into the Lake of Fire, but I believe that out of all the created beings, Satan will be the last one thrown into that place of eternal torment. Then all of the Lord Jesus Christ’s enemies will be subdued.
What we are asked to do is remain in hope, not “hopeful of” as some who have temporary doubts consider that word, but remaining in hope of that final day when we will stand before the Almighty and hear Him say.
“Behold, I make all things new.” (Rev. 21:5a)
Until then, in patience we possess our souls, and we watch, on nearly a daily basis, as His enemies are subdued.
The question for you then is this, can you spot His enemies, can you recognize those who the Almighty considers the enemies of His Son? If you cannot, then you will never be able to apply this verse to anyone you meet.
“Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.” (Matt. 7:6)
If you cannot tell the difference between faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and all the promises of the Scriptures concerning Him, and those works-based religious organizations, then you do not understand Matthew 15:14.
“Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.”
Herein lies a part of mankind that few will contemplate at length, that hope should spring eternal, as it is said, and it stems from one particular incident in time.
“And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43)
Hope, right up until their very last breath, that my friends is how most people think. Whether it is the correct way to think or not I will leave up to you, but realize these two things, the Lord Jesus Christ has enemies that will be, and are in context, being subdued today, and for us who still walk upon this planet, we want to believe that as long as anyone is still breathing there is hope.
Innumerable sermons have been given over the centuries about that thief on the cross, offering last-minute hope, how many sermons have you heard about the thief on the other side of our Savior that day?
The wicked are being subdued every day, we wait in hope for the day when all of them will be.
