Faith without comprehension is irrelevant, “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?” (Romans 10:14) Without the Word of God it is impossible to understand the word, and will, of God.
An oxymoronic statement, I know, nevertheless it stands as truth, unless you are reading and studying the Holy Scriptures, your faith will never know a fulness, you will never experience all that the Lord has in store for you. Sadly, few who call Him Lord rarely, if ever, pick up the sacred text, they hear what they want to hear in the Sunday morning service, and then concern themselves with the cares of the world throughout the rest of the week. There are those also that are doing the work of the Lord, and at times find it difficult to stop and spend time in His word, the work set before them seems pressing, this also is a fault. The work would not be possible without comprehension of the truths behind it, the Bible, the task would be irrelevant if the Scriptures were not the reason for the task.
It is Christ we serve, and the only way that we are going to know about our Savior is through His words. He has used individuals down through the ages, imparted wisdom unto them who are to teach and lead all they meet, yet even in this all is to be done for His glory, for it is the reason behind all of creation, to glorify the Most High. All of the children of God are to be witnesses for Him, there are no exceptions, and not only are they to tell and teach others of Christ and His Sovereign Lordship and love, but they are to do so in knowledge, in love with firm truth. If you are not studying the word, if you are not memorizing key verses that inform the lost of their need for a Savior, then you are remiss in your duties, and I dare say, will be seen as unprofitable to the kingdom. All are to serve.
For those who have difficulty comprehending the truths in the word, there are a myriad of teachers available, in most places on this planet His word is still freely available, there are literally thousands of books, if internet access is available, all excuses go out the door. For those who are yet simple minded, the Scriptures are quite clear, “How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?” (Prov. 1:22) If any who have been called by His name truly desire to know Him intimately, He will honor that desire. “I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.” (Prov. 8:17) I know this is a tired, worn out statement, but if I have been blessed in this way, anyone can. If you knew my background, you would have no other option than to give God the glory for where He has placed me today.
All who are becoming Spiritually mature, able to rightly divide the word of truth, (2 Tim. 2:15) did not become that way only through hours and years of diligent study, but by the will of God, through much prayer, and yes, by immersing themselves in the word. Along with all these though, one must contemplate His word, it is not enough to read, or even to study diligently, His word must be hid in your heart, you might, in fact it is necessary, to contemplate, to debate, if you understand the proper meaning of that word, His truths throughout the day. With this continuous mental exercise must come the seeking of His face for the wisdom that only He can impart, a fervent desire to be filled with the knowledge of God, (Eph. 3:19) a longing to be filled with the knowledge of His will, (Col. 1:9) to seek the face of God is to seek His very nature.
In this world most are easily led astray, one need only to look at the current circumstances to see this truth, without a firm grasp of the truths of the Scriptures, without a fervent desire to serve Christ only because He is worthy of that service, with no other intention, without comprehension of the word, many will be led astray, and those who are thus led are led away in ignorance. “Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.” (Romans 1:13) “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.” (Psalm 14:1)
I am concerned that there are many who call Him Lord that are acting quite foolishly lately. Ignorance of the truths of Scripture will not be a viable excuse on your day of accounting.
