Satan is the father of lies, (John 8:44) the world at this present time belongs to him, he is the prince of the power of the air, (Eph. 2:2) the god of this earth (2 Cor. 4:4) and so the factual evidence presented in the Scriptures is truth, this world is built on and run on lies.
There are island resorts that people flock to, or at least used to, mountain retreats, entertainment giants that invited thousands of people a day to enjoy the rides and enticing enjoyments. Behind all of them is concrete, steel and wood, painted externally to draw us in to some form of pleasure that can never be anything more then temporal. Every single commercial that you see on whatever media device of your choice is meant to invoke some form of emotion, and that emotion is most generally based in some form of perceived need within ourselves, you have been trained since your youth to want.
“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.” (Psalm 23:1) Not all wants are sins of course, not everyone has a desire to openly rebel, but that is why our adversary is subtle, that is why he tempts us, and even when he is not physically present to do so, he has left a trail of crumbs to follow to entice us to what we think we want nearly everywhere we go. He twists the Word of God at every opportunity, the rainbow is not remembered as the Lord’s eternal promise to never flood the entire earth again, but a path that at the end has a pot of gold. Although there is no commandment in the Scriptures to celebrate the Lord’s birth in any particular form, we do so, yet the average person now is led to believe that if you do not give someone a Christmas present that means that you do not love them. The celebration of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ now, which still amazes me, is represented by a rabbit with a basket of eggs no less.
The more the Lord blesses those who desire to see Him glorified with the revealing of the open lies, the more the subtle ones over time become obvious, and the more we can apply in understanding James 1:27, “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.”
Every need that every child of God has will be provided for you, this is a promise from God Himself. “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 4:19) The wants that we have envisioned are our responsibility to maintain in our minds and hearts, we are no longer under the power of sin, it no longer holds dominion over us, (Romans 6:14) we do not need Satan to tempt us, we are quite proficient at doing that ourselves, but to those whom he has noticed, he is more than willing to offer assistance in this area, he does after all own this planet and all that is in it at the moment.
“And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.” (Luke 4:5-7)
With enough effort, you can have almost anything you want, you simply need to apply yourself to those desires, but for the born-again believer, we must make this decision, is it worth the trade-off? The first thought in the mind of a married man when he begins to fall into an emotional affair with someone, when thoughts of adultery and temporary pleasures begin to entice him is not “Am I willing to lose what I have for this momentary pleasure of the flesh?”
The average person, saved and wicked, is bombarded daily with the offerings of this world, with the enticements of our adversary, with supposed wants that, as shown and sometimes perceived, will lead to pleasure, and they will. But you must remember that what we are being offered is a lie, it is temporary, there is nothing eternally satisfying in any of them. There are pleasures forevermore awaiting us (Psalm 16:11) but for now, you must keep your body under subjection. (1 Cor. 9:27) “The righteous man wisely considereth the house of the wicked: but God overthroweth the wicked for their wickedness.” (Prov. 21:12)
