Be Thou Exalted

“Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; let thy glory be above all the earth.” (Psalm 57:5) This is not one of those verses that you get to read and then move on to the next one, not unless you like it right where you are. To the man or woman of God who desires for this verse to be a part of who they are, they need to realize this, you will be done, finished, as it were.

What you have just done is given all authority of your life, every aspect of it, over to the Almighty to do with as He best sees fit. No take backs, no do-overs, no “I really didn’t mean it,” all that you are, ever will be, all your hopes, dreams, aspirations, everything, no matter the consequence, you give to Christ.

This is not just a verse that asks, or requests that the Lord be Lord over all, He already is, He needs no affirmation of this truth, it is a deeply personal revelation to ourselves that we have ceded the title of our remaining existence to Him, for His glory and the glory of the Lamb.

When, and if, we ever come to this point there is a great peace, for it means that we finally and firmly trust Him, it is the fulness of John 14:15, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” It is the complete acknowledgment of 1 Corinthians 2:2, “For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” It is the cementing of Philippians 1:21, “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” It is the last step in dying to ourselves, for when this point arrives, it means that we no longer care about our well-being in the way that the majority of people do, including most who know Him as Lord, for in essence, this is the last step to complete submission to the Holy Spirit within us.

Nothing becomes more precious to us than Christ, we can understand that “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” (Psalm 16:11) We realize that without Him, there is no life, no truth. “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6)

This is the final bridge, if you please, that most will not cross, in fact most will not even see it in this life, they want the rewards without truly running the race, they want to hold onto just a small part of themselves, even the tiniest fragment, for to speak these words is certain death, but, and this is only a personal belief, it may be the only path to eternal life. Jesus made it clear in many places that those who desired to follow Him must die to self, they must not hold onto even the smallest fragment, He accepts all, or nothing.

This was once taught in many churches not so long ago, but today this ultimate sacrifice, which is only our rightful duty, (Romans 12:1) has been replaced with a milk toast approach to servitude, going so far down that church attendance, or even the presumption that the smallest part of us, is good enough. “And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil? and if ye offer the lame and sick, is it not evil? offer it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee, or accept thy person? saith the LORD of hosts.” (Malachi 1:8) We bring the least and behave as if it has costs us much.

The faith of many who profess Christ as Lord is so watered down it is almost unrecognizable, the world has not just infiltrated their churches, but their hearts, the decision to serve Him, to exalt Him above the heavens is reserved behind personal desires and ambitions, he is not first in their lives. A few simple questions will point this truth out quite easily. But it is God that looks on the heart, (1 Sam. 16:7) it is God that judges in this area, our concern is not for ourselves though, if it were, then this verse is nothing more than the next verse on the page to you. It is the Holy Spirit that convicts a man, by the Word of God, but it is through us that He reaches out to all. If your life is not lived for Christ, then it is lived for self, there is no third alternative. Someone is being exalted in your life, you need to find out who it is.
