“But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:42)
I will not dishonor, disrespect or in any way question the words of our Savior here, but I will ask questions of you about them.
Unless Martha was one of those grandmotherly types who thought, “You have come to my house, you need to eat,” even if you are not hungry, she was providing a service that was acceptable, while Mary did nothing but sat at Christ’s feet.
I speak to those in this short letter today who want to do the same, who love Him so much that nothing else matters but being beside Him, who have no other desires than to remain at His feet continuously, and I will ask you this question, what purpose or value do you have for the Kingdom of God?
“And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.” (Isaiah 6:3)
That is, as far as we know, all the Seraphim have ever done and will ever do, it is their purpose of existence, an action performed for a reason, the glory of God Almighty. Pastors preach, men of God serve as they are called to serve, prophets and apostles had tasks placed before them, throughout history the Almighty has called people to Himself for specific purposes, and so I ask of you who desire nothing more either today or throughout eternity than to sit at the feet of the Lord Jesus Christ, what is your purpose?
I am afraid that you cannot say, “It’s what I want” because servants do not get to choose what they want to do, they do what they have been commanded to do, and I cannot think of one place in the Scriptures where the Lord says, “Come here and sit at my feet.”
We are to “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46:10) Those who have received them will cast their crowns at His feet, none of us are worthy enough to unlatch the shoes of His feet, and Isaiah 52:7 is a truth.
“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!”
If this letter is for you, I understand the love you have for the Lord Jesus Christ, I understand that there is no place that you would rather be than at His feet, whether He is speaking or not, there is a comfort there for you that few can probably fully comprehend, but is it a selfish comfort?
And you must ask yourself this question as well, is your faith based on emotions instead of the facts of the Scriptures, do you need His continual closeness to remain faithful, without fear, full of the assurance of His love for you whether He is near, as we have a want to say, or far? Is your faith just as strong in the dry and thirsty land as it is beside the still waters?
How do you, as one who would be content, and possibly could not be content anywhere else but at His feet continually, answer to John 14:15, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
I do not know why our Lord said that to Martha that day, I honestly think you had to be there and know as well the thoughts of Martha, and then you would need to know, what did Martha do, return to the kitchen or come and sit as well at His feet?
We who have been born-again are hid in Christ, we can be no nearer or farther from Him than we are today. When we see Him in person we will understand this truth better, but today if this short letter is for you, you must ask yourself this question, can you be as comfortable in the assurance of His eternal presence in your life when He sends you out to perform tasks for Him as when you are sitting at His feet?
Do you not believe the truth of Deuteronomy 31:8, “And the Lord, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.”
Can you rest in the comfort of John 10:28, “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any pluck them out of my hand.”
What commandments of Christ are you obeying if all you want is to sit at His feet?
