…….and the Lord Taketh Away

The plagues of Egypt are long forgotten, the fire and brimstone that fell upon Sodom and Gomorrah remain in the same place in history, as the flood in the days of Noah, science has made sure of that. We are in these days as those recorded in the Book of Judges, the generation that has forgotten and “done evil in the sight of the Lord.” (Judges 3:12)

What science cannot explain in a historical context, it attempts to debunk if it can, and if not, it will simply make something up that sounds logical to man. Miracles of the Lord are nearly always explained away by men of no faith.

Philosophy takes the same approach, sin, in every context, must be averted, human nature is generally good in this study, and verses such as “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jer. 17:9) must be explained away by a terrible childhood, or perhaps an incident that has left someone scarred and unable to exist with the rest of us in the accepted reality.

Liberalism is the child, the offspring of these two studies, and stands against the will and Word of God in all that He has said and offered to mankind, it is the fulfillment of Romans 1:22, “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,”

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Heb. 11:1) Faith comes from the Lord, it is the ability to trust what we cannot prove through science or philosophy, it is the proof of the unseen, the unknown and the invisible, but that faith cannot be blind, it must, in its own right, have verifiable proof of its existence, and since that faith in Christ can only come from the Almighty, He is the One that is responsible to prove His existence to us.

Much of what the modern Christian today, as we shall call him, needs to see or experience of that faith, that proof, harkens back to the days of the Old Testament, at least in part, those who were blessed by the Lord had material possessions, His favor toward them was shown by the proof of the amount of worldly wealth they possessed. Whether most believers in Christ will admit it to themselves or not, this ideology of prosperity theology rests within their minds. If you’re relatively healthy, have a home or at least a permanent residence, and food each day, along with much of the wants that fill that place where you lay your head each night, then you are in the “good graces” of the Lord, and as such your faith in Him will remain strong.

I would ask you this question, not only of those people you know that claim Christ as Lord, but of yourself, who has more faith, you, or them if you prefer, or Lazarus who “was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table,” (Luke 16:20-21) you, or Job as he said, “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.” (Job 13:15) You, or Paul as he said “For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.” (2 Cor. 12:8)

Health, wealth and earthly happiness are not the indicators of a life of faith, of one pleasing to the Lord, rejoicing in times of trials and tribulations is. When all is taken away from us, when the pain of the flesh, the frustration of the mind tetters constantly on the brink of despair, and the heart cries out in praise to the Most High is when we find if we are men and women of the Lord God, if we are indeed servants of Jesus Christ.

This is a far cry from nearly everything that has been taught in most Evangelical churches over the last few decades, Jesus was a man acquainted with grief and sorrow, so we wouldn’t have to be, He was despised and rejected by men, (Isaiah 53:3) so we could enjoy their company and find happiness in this world.

I will leave you with this thought, when was the last time you prayed earnestly as Paul did, and meant it, to be a part of the fellowship of Christ’s sufferings (Phil 3:10) when was the last time you heard a sermon on how we should be seeking poverty, not only in this world, but in our hearts, so that we could learn what it truly means to need to trust completely in the Lord, not because He is our “Last hope,” as so many do, but so that you can experience what He experienced, so that you can become truly “Christ-like.”

This is why the fallacy of “God is only love,” has been extensively used by Satan in these last few decades, love means a place to sleep and food on the table, it means that the things of the world are given to them who have faith in Christ, and all of those people in and of the world will be as Job’s three “friends,” and continually speak these words to us, if God’s favor is upon you, then the things of the world are laid at your doorstep, if they are not, then you must have sinned.

I have often wondered how Lazarus, sitting at the gate of the rich man, covered in sores, would have answered those three friends of Job. Perhaps laughter in hearing their foolish words would have been his only needed response. Very few can truly understand these words today, “Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.” (Job 1:21) And there are few that have a desire to say them.
